Starting new: First learnings from the Triplatimantti podcast

Last week, Tiitta Vaulos and I launched a new work-life podcast, Triplatimantti, and it’s been very nice to get feedback from many people, and also questions about the background of it. The idea for Triplatimantti was born during evening walks around the city with Tiitta. We both live in Kruununhaka, and those walks have been a nice way to decompress and think aloud. Over the years, our conversations have circled around all kinds of joys and crises, both work-related and personal.

With crises, the main topic has been the same: what does it mean to move forward after a crisis or turbulence, and how do you actually do it? It has become clear that learnings from professional and personal challenges have a lot in common. Resilience grows through experience, and there is always more to learn.

At some point, we realised it would be both fun and meaningful to invite interesting people to talk with us with a bit wider scope: growth, development, and moving forward. The conversations focus on work-life experiences, but also have a personal perspective. We wanted to record these discussions so that we could revisit them later, and perhaps others could also find inspiration in them.

Getting started

Planning the podcast was a lot of fun. Thinking about the concept, coming up with a name, outlining themes, and listing potential guests gave us energy. There are so many fascinating people whose insights we would love to hear. The first three guests were superb: Katri Viippola, CEO of Finnish Work, Jarno Kartela, Director of Digital & Experience at Marimekko, and Laura Snellman-Junna, founder of Wonna.

We also spent quite a bit of time figuring out the practical side: recording gear, lighting, laptops, phones, cables, and where we would actually record. We decided to start with a mobile studio, so that guests would not have to come to us, but we would go to them. That setup has worked surprisingly well, and for now, we plan to continue that way.

Learning with the help of AI

From the beginning, we wanted to make the most of what AI can offer, especially for recording and editing. Tiitta did extensive research on different tools, for example, Audacity and Descript, and we ended up choosing Riverside. It had the flexibility and features that fit our needs, and the pricing fit, even if setting it up was not entirely smooth.

Phones overheated, microphones misbehaved, test recordings failed, but we learned a lot. And there is still plenty to learn: how to balance audio and video, find good camera angles, and optimise microphone performance. We knew editing would take time, and it surely does, but Tiitta has been experimenting and improving continuously.

On my side, I have enjoyed working on the web presence. I built a Triplatimantti podcast page to collect all episodes and information in one place. It was satisfying to see how quickly I could make custom CSS adjustments with the help of ChatGPT. Creating web pages now is much faster than, for example, when I built this blog five years ago.

I have set up Instagram, Spotify, and Apple Podcasts accounts and explored how publishing works between our personal and Triplatimantti profiles. We are still working on YouTube and other platforms that might come.

Behind the scenes

Our mobile studio has led to funny moments, for example, Tiitta has been standing on a meeting table adjusting ceiling lights for better video quality. There has been some frustration and also a lot of laughter, because of missing cables and wrong mics. Luckily, our wonderful pilot guests have taken our experimentation with good humour. As Katri said a week before recording our first pilot: “If it doesn’t work the first time, we’ll just do it again.”

That line pretty much sums up our mindset. We have been building as we go along and have had help from friends, for example, a beautiful Triplatimantti logo made by Reetta Eskola. We also owe thanks to my friends/podcasters Antti Niemi, Sami Kallinen, Riina Aho, Ritva Leino, and Annika Räihä for all the advice and encouragement. Sharing really is caring.

Three pilot episodes are now live

The theme of the pilot episodes is the good and the bad sides of working life, and we found some real gems in those conversations. We have been talking, for example, about how crises aren’t obstacles, they’re fuel for growth, and about leaders’ superpowers, recruiting principles and many other topics. Thank you to our amazing guests!

Welcome to join us as we talk about growth, development, and moving forward!
