Camilla Tuominen has been very personal when telling her story and sharing learnings from her path. The sense of caring and wanting to help people is even clearer in her new book Tunteet ei kuulu työpaikalle. What is it in everyday business life that prevents people from showing or encountering emotions? Askes Camilla and gives many answers.
Emotions are not always easy to talk about. A range of emotions can arise, especially when there is a need for development, but your counterpart or team member doesn’t see it the same way. There can be a conflict of interest, denial, hurt feelings, or even anger. But I agree with Camilla when she says: “Don’t fear emotions. Fear silence.” Innovations seldom come from only one individual and ideas don’t have the room to develop, if there is silence.
One aspect is that you shouldn’t confuse expressing your emotions with misbehavior. Continues misbehavior or put-downs from a safe distance have no excuses. Camilla’s books and presentations have always given me new ideas on how to handle difficult situations and also deep thoughts on how to develop my own skills as a companion, co-worker, and leader.
I think the best feeling comes when you’re able to be vulnerable with your team members or your trusted ones at the office. The laugher and sometimes even tears shared together help you to understand one another. Sharing emotions helps you to take into account multiple things going on in lives outside the office. Expressing gratitude and using the word love in the work context also!
I’ve had the privilege of knowing Camilla in private life for a long time and I’ve also had the pleasure of working with her. She was an inspirational speaker in a Culture Workshop I hosted two years ago and I’ve used her public speeches when wanting to inspire team members or people around me.
Lastly few words about Camilla’s illustrations and audio version of the newest book. Camilla’s text always goes hand in hand with illustrations and I feel the pictures lift the text by giving more layers to it. There is something with the soft and rounded shapes of her drawings combined with the hard truth that is very appealing to me.
The illustrations also work with busy people who don’t have the time to concentrate on reading about emotions. They cleverly allure attention to matters that are quite often the most important ones.
I also listened to the newest book in Bookbeat, and Camilla’s passion comes nicely through when she is reading the book herself. A list of positive emotions read by her is just wonderful. I felt a bit sad when I heard her starting the last chapter, but luckily the last chapter was a long one.
It’s not an easy journey to be vulnerable and start to lead your emotions better, but one worth taking. Camilla’s book is a perfect place to start.
